The George II period spans from 1727 to 1760, characterised by a transition from the restrained lines of the Queen Anne era to more elaborate Rococo influences, featuring heavy casting, sculptural form and rich ornamentation such as shells and scrolls.

These pieces were typically cast in sterling silver using the lost-wax method or sand-casting techniques, then finished with hand-chasing and engraving. Weighted bases containing resin, wood or lead were frequently employed to ensure stability.

Authenticity is verified through clear hallmarks, including the makers mark (such as that of John Cafe), the lion passant for sterling silver, the leopards head for London, and a date letter corresponding to the mid-18th century. Examination of wear patterns, construction seams and casting quality also assists authentication.

They can be used to anchor a dining table centrepiece, displayed on a mantelpiece or placed upon a sideboard to introduce classical metallic texture and reflective warmth into modern or traditional room schemes.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a specialized, non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth to avoid removing fine chasing or hallmarks. Storing items in a dry, tarnish-resistant environment helps maintain their finish.
