The William and Mary style, prevalent in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, is characterised by Dutch influences, sophisticated marquetry and parquetry, trumpet or inverted-cup turning, and the widespread adoption of walnut as a primary timber.

These pieces were typically constructed using oak or pine carcases, which were then veneered with figured walnut, laburnum, or olive wood. Elaborate pieces often featured cross-banding, feather-banding, and intricate brasses.

Authenticity is determined by examining construction techniques such as hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage, original secondary woods like oak or deal, patination, and the correct period brass hardware or ghost marks from previous fittings.

An antique escritoire serves as a focal point in contemporary spaces when paired with minimalist seating and neutral walls, allowing the rich grain and historical craftsmanship of the walnut to stand out.

Maintain antique walnut by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting. Apply microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the wood and protect the historical finish.
