It is beautifully detailed, with the chick's back being the cushion, which is finished in an unusual dusky pink velvet. Novelty silver pin cushions gained immense popularity in late Victorian and Edwardian Britain, produced by makers such as Sampson Mordan & Co to cater to the Victorians fascination with whimsical, zoomorphic household items.

These pieces are typically fashioned from cast or stamped sterling silver, often featuring detailed chasing or repousse work to depict feathers, paired with an internal cork or sawdust stuffing covered in plush velvet or silk.

Authentic pieces usually bear the makers mark (such as S.M or Sampson Mordan & Co), alongside standard British hallmarks indicating the town assay office, metal purity, and date letter.

These small-scale decorative objects work well as styled accents on dressing tables, bookshelves, or mantelpieces, adding a touch of historical character and intricate detail to contemporary spaces.

Silver should be cleaned sparingly with a soft microfibre cloth to avoid removing collector patination or damaging the delicate fabric, keeping the item away from direct sunlight and high humidity.
