Travelling inkwells became popular in the 19th century as literacy rates increased and portable writing sets became essential for travellers, often featuring secure screw-top or hinged lids with glass liners to prevent leaks.

These items were typically constructed using sterling silver for the lids and mounts, paired with heavy cut crystal or glass reservoirs to hold the ink securely.

Authentic pieces are identified by clear hallmarks stamped on the metal, including a makers mark, a purity mark such as the lion passant for sterling silver, a date letter, and a town assay mark.

It can be placed on a mahogany or walnut desk, or atop a stack of vintage books on a bookshelf, adding a touch of historical texture and metallic sheen to the space.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a specialist non-abrasive silver polish and a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage engraving and remove desirable patina.
