This Stuart period candlestick dates from the late 17th or early 18th century and is made of pewter with a dark grey finish. The construction is solid metal with visible surface wear, scratches, and pale mottled markings across the heavy components. The design includes a circular tray base with a flared foot, supporting a turned baluster stem with multiple contoured mouldings leading up to the top socket. The object stands 21 cm high, 14.5 cm wide, and 14.5 cm deep. In a modern home, this piece fits well upon a mantelpiece or within a gentleman's library setting to display antique metalwork. The wide base functions practically as a drip pan while anchoring the vertical column securely. The antique character shows through the aged patina and the classical proportions of the turned shaft, reflecting historical craftsmanship from the period.

Dust regularly with a soft cloth and wash with warm water and mild detergent; avoid abrasive polishes or chemical cleaners that remove historic patina and surface oxidisation.

Arrange dark metalware on wooden dining tables, marble mantelpieces, or stacked books to add textural contrast and historical depth to contemporary spaces.

Authentic pieces display heavy hand-cast construction, lathe-turning marks, original solder joints at the base or stem junctions, and maker touchmarks struck near the rim or underneath the base.

Historic English pewter was an alloy composed primarily of tin, combined with copper, lead, or antimony to increase hardness, cast in iron or brass moulds before hand-finishing on a lathe.

Stuart era pewter candlesticks, dating from the 17th century, typically feature turned baluster stems, heavy broad circular bases, and wide drip pans designed to catch melted tallow or wax.
