Vintage Deco Style Silver Cigarette Box Birmingham 1944

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Aramis Antiques
Description

A vintage George VI era Art Deco style silver cigarette box with clear hallmarks on box and lid for Birmingham 1944 and makers mark for Marples & Beasley. Although made in the era of World War II, the box has a distinctive Art Deco design with all round engine turned finish and two square corners on the lid with contrasting vertical lines. The clip opener and backing are plain silver as is the oblong cartouche below. The flat protruding feet are also consistent with Deco design. The box is lined with cedar wood. In WWII food was rationed and just about everyone smoked cigarettes to keep the hunger pangs at bay - most homes would have had a box like this - and the design of it was well chosen. It is in very good condition, with some wear consistent with age on the leather base but no splits in the leather. Weight 11oz/340gr including loaded base.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco silver cigarette boxes typically feature clean geometric silhouettes, engine-turned patterns, and streamlined decorative panels that emerged during the 1920s through the 1940s as desktop accessories.

These boxes were constructed with a solid sterling silver exterior, stamped with purity hallmarks, and frequently lined internally with cedar wood to absorb moisture and preserve contents.

Authentic British pieces feature stamped hallmarks indicating the makers mark, silver purity standard, assay office symbol such as an anchor for Birmingham, and a specific date letter.

Position the box on an executive desk, coffee table, or sideboard as a functional storage container for stationery or small items, providing a structured metallic accent.

Polish the silver exterior gently using a soft microfibre cloth and specialised silver polish, ensuring moisture does not enter or affect the internal wood lining.
