This Chinese table lamp from the early 20th century exemplifies Oriental export style in a gentleman's library. Constructed from dark brown hardwood with a polished finish, the piece is formed as a traditional dragon head with hand-carved relief scales down the arched neck, terminating in a turned circular base supported by three carved claw feet. A twisted fabric cord suspends a metallic copper lamp holder from the dragon's mouth, complemented by visible circular wood turnings around the lower shaft. The lamp stands 70 cm high, 20 cm wide, and 20 cm deep. Placement suits an office desk or side table in a study, providing focused task lighting whilst serving as a decorative sculptural accent. The warm tones of the timber and the complex oriental motifs integrate readily with traditional or eclectic interior schemes. Electrical components require a standard bulb and domestic socket connection.

FAQs

Carved wooden dragon lamps often draw upon traditional East Asian motifs, where the dragon symbolises power, strength, and good fortune, frequently crafted for export or domestic use during the late 19th and 20th centuries.

These pieces are typically hand-carved from dense regional hardwoods such as rosewood, camphor, or mahogany, featuring intricate relief work and traditional joinery methods at the base.

Authenticity is indicated by hand-tooled chisel marks, natural patination of the timber, age-appropriate wear around handling points, and historical wiring components that may have been updated for modern safety.

Such sculptural pieces work well as focal points on side tables, desks, or credenzas, pairing effectively with neutral surroundings that allow the intricate woodwork to stand out.

Maintain the wood by dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally applying a microcrystalline wax to nourish the grain, while avoiding direct sunlight and excessive moisture.
