Unique William and Mary Walnut Bureau Cabinet, Circa 1690

Description

Very interesting estate made William and Mary walnut bureau cabinet. Coming in two parts, the top has three drawers over a fall front behind which is a series of drawers. Beneath the fall front are two further drawers and another fall which rests on pull out lopers, behind which is a fitted interior. The bottom section has three drawers, standing on four square tapering painted front legs, a shelf and two back legs united by a panelled back board. Interestingly, the secondary timber is elm, as can be seen on the drawer fronts and interior. This is a really interesting and probably unique piece of English furniture

This unusual late seventeenth-century William and Mary bureau cabinet is constructed in two sections from walnut, oak, elm and brass, presenting a warm brown colour throughout. The upper section comprises three small frieze drawers above a drop-down fall front enclosing a fitted interior, over two further drawers and a sloping fall-front desk that rests on pull-out lopers. The lower base features three small drawers set above an arched apron, supported by four square-tapering turned front legs and two back legs joined by a lower shelf and a panelled back board. Fine details include brass teardrop handles and keyhole escutcheons mounted across the drawer fronts and drop fronts. The piece measures 184 cm high, 103 cm wide and 57 cm deep. Positioned in a gentleman's library or study, this substantial desk provides extensive storage combined with a practical writing surface.
