Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Wall sconces originated as functional holders for candles or torches, mounted on walls to illuminate corridors and rooms before the advent of electricity. Over centuries, master woodcarvers produced ornate wooden sconces reflecting prevailing architectural periods, transitioning later to accommodate electrical wiring.

Authentic period sconces are typically hand-carved from dense hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or mahogany. Construction often involves mortise and tenon joints for structural stability, featuring hand-carved relief details and patinated brass or bronze hardware components.

Authentication relies on examining tool marks, timber shrinkage, oxidation patterns on metal fittings, and the consistency of the patina. Hand-cut joinery, older screw types, and natural wear consistent with age differentiate genuine antique pieces from modern reproductions.

Integrating antique sconces into modern spaces creates textural contrast by pairing historic craftsmanship with clean architectural lines. They can be wired for electricity and positioned as accent lighting in hallways, above sideboards, or flanking a fireplace.

Preservation requires dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the wood surface. Avoid chemical cleaners and direct exposure to moisture or strong heat sources to protect the aged timber and finish.
