Ancient Silk Bursa Rug

19th century
Description

An ancient masterpiece, this silk Bursa rug is more than 200 years old and very finely woven.  A true masterpiece of weaving from the city of Bursa in north-west Anatolia.  Bursa was extremely important for the Ottoman silk trade, acting as a focal point for importing silk from China to Persia, and the city of Bursa itself produced exceptional silk rugs.  The detail and colour palette are graceful and retain the dyes colours from the early 1800's.  It is one of the finest weaves we have seen in over 30 years, the skill to weave a silk rug this fine is remarkable.  The background dye is a light aubergine colour to our eye, with a golden yellow and green toned border.  Deep indigo blues have been used along reds and pale blues for the floral design.

As this silk rug is a very early example, their are some to be expected areas of wear, and old restoration too.  We have taken 15 additional images, so you can view the rugs condition up close, all taken in natural light. We would recommend viewing the rug in person to see how beautiful it is, as the photographs really do not do it justice.  This rug is a work of art, it can still be used as a decorative item on the floor, if placed in a bedroom or low traffic area, it would also be stunning as a wall hanging too.

Contact us to organise viewing this exceptional rare rug at home or in our showroom soon.  We are open Monday to Saturday by appointment and our home visits can be arranged throughout the UK on a day and time to suit you.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Bursa silk rugs originate from the historical Ottoman weaving centre in Turkey, known for fine hand-knotted construction using pure silk threads. They typically display geometric floral motifs, repeating medallions, and complex multi-band borders in muted natural dyes.

Authentic pieces feature silk pile knotted onto a silk or cotton warp and weft structure using the symmetrical Turkish double knot (Ghiordes). The high knot density achievable with fine silk allows for intricate detailing and a soft, lustrous pile.

Authentic silk carpets exhibit a noticeable sheen that changes tone when viewed from different angles due to the direction of the pile. Examining the underside reveals clear knotting definition, slight irregular variations in hand-spun thread, and flexibility unattainable with synthetic fibres.

Place the rug on neutral wooden flooring to anchor a seating arrangement or dining space, allowing its terracotta and indigo tones to contrast with modern furnishings. Due to its delicate nature, silk rugs perform best in lower-traffic areas such as drawing rooms, bedrooms, or library spaces.

Avoid direct sunlight to prevent colour fading, and vacuum gently using a suction-only attachment without a rotary brush. Address spills immediately by blotting with a dry white cloth, and seek professional specialist dry cleaning for thorough maintenance.
