During the Victorian era, sewing was an essential skill for women, leading to the creation of ornate, functional sewing tools crafted from silver, ivory, and mother-of-pearl. These items were often kept in specialised sewing boxes or displayed on work tables as a sign of accomplishment and social standing.

These items typically featured a structural framework made from sterling silver, base metal alloys, or turned bone, encasing a stuffed core of wool, sawdust, or bran, and upholstered in durable textiles such as velvet, silk, or wool.

Authenticity is determined by examining hallmarks on silver elements, hand-engraved detailing, traditional construction methods, and appropriate patination consistent with age and handling.

Small antique sewing items can be displayed as decorative curiosities inside glass cloches, arranged on a bookshelf amongst vintage books, or placed on a mantlepiece as a subtle nod to historical craftsmanship.

Silver should be cleaned sparingly with a soft microfibre cloth to maintain its patina, avoiding harsh chemical dips that strip historical oxidation. Textiles must be kept away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fibre degradation.
