FAQs

A George III bow front chest of drawers is a late eighteenth or early nineteenth-century storage piece featuring a curved convex front facade. Popularised in Britain during the reign of King George III, this design maximized storage capacity while softening the visual lines within a room.

Georgian chests were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, featuring hand-cut dovetail drawer joints and secondary timbers like pine or oak. Curved fronts were crafted through veneering over laminated groundworks or shaped solid timber.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-sawn secondary timber on the drawer backs and bottoms, hand-cut dovetail joints, and age-related wear near handles and feet. Original locks, cockbeading around drawer edges, and natural oxidisation on the timber underside also indicate period authenticity.

A Georgian bow front chest functions well in an entryway, living room, or bedroom as a anchor piece. Positioning contemporary artwork or a modern ceramic table lamp on top creates an effective juxtaposition between historical woodwork and contemporary design.

Keep the chest away from direct heat sources and central heating radiators to prevent veneer cracking or wood movement. Clean surfaces with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year, buffing along the grain.
