Victorian silver card cases became popular during the 19th century as social etiquette required the exchange of visiting cards among the gentry and upper classes. Silversmiths crafted these receptacles in various sizes to fit neatly into pockets or evening bags.

These items were predominantly fashioned from sterling silver, utilising techniques such as repousse, chased floral decoration, engine turning, and hand engraving to personalise the surface with family crests or monograms.

Authentic pieces bear British hallmarks stamped directly onto the metal, typically including a standard mark for sterling silver, a town mark indicating the assay office, a date letter for the specific year of production, and a makers mark.

Small silver collectibles can be displayed on decorative trays, within glass-fronted cabinets, or on mantelpieces to add historical texture and refined metallic accents to contemporary room schemes.

Maintain antique silver by storing it in a dry environment and cleaning it infrequently with a non-abrasive silver cloth to preserve the patina, avoiding harsh liquid dips that can strip away desirable oxidisation.
