Vesta cases, or matchsafes, were introduced in the mid-19th century following the invention of friction matches, providing a safe pocket enclosure for carrying matches.

These pocket containers were predominantly crafted from sterling silver, though examples were also manufactured from brass, base metals, ivory, and occasionally gold.

Authenticity is confirmed by examining the struck hallmarks on the metal, which typically include a makers mark, a standard mark for silver purity, a town assay mark such as the Birmingham anchor, and a date letter.

These small objects are frequently displayed as cabinet curiosities, arranged on decorative trays on coffee tables, or utilised within a desk display.

Silver items should be cleaned sparingly using a non-abrasive specialist silver cloth to preserve the patina and original engraving, avoiding harsh chemical dips.
