Description

I love these chunky bags, made for tough, hard-wearing use, with the face woven in soumak technique and the back in narrow horizontal bands of flat-weave. The original tassels remain intact - symbolically inserted for good luck - and the braided handle also remains complete. This is a rare salt-bag, woven by the Sanjabi Kurds around 1880 and in excellent condition.

Salt-bags, as the name implies, were made for carrying lumps of rock-salt which was given to the animals during long migrations to help in the dehydration process. Namakdan of this age are rare, as they were put to hard use, were totally utilitarian, never intended for sale and when worn and threadbare, they were simply disposed of and a new one woven.

Size: 56cm x 40cm (1' 10" x 1' 4").

Kurdish salt bags, or namakdan, were traditionally woven by nomadic and village tribes in the Kurdistan region to store coarse rock salt used for livestock.

These utility items were typically crafted using handspun wool for both the warp and weft, often combining flatweave tapestry techniques with supplementary weft-wrapping or pile-woven faces.

Authentic pieces feature natural hand-dyed wools showing subtle abrash variations in colour, traditional tribal motifs specific to regions like Sanjabi or Senna, and genuine signs of nomadic utility wear.

These woven pieces can be mounted on linen backing and framed as wall art, or displayed on stands to introduce rich texture, geometric pattern, and historical depth to contemporary spaces.

Preservation requires keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent dye fading, storing or displaying it in well-ventilated areas, and occasionally vacuuming gently through a mesh screen using low suction.
