During the Victorian period, advances in electroplating allowed middle and upper-class households to afford elaborate tableware that previously was reserved for solid silver owners. Entree dishes were essential components of formal multi-course dinners, used to keep small courses warm at the dining table or sideboard.

These items are constructed from a base metal, typically copper or nickel-silver, which is coated in a layer of silver using electroplating techniques developed in the mid-19th century. Features such as cast figural finials and hand-chased borders were soldered and assembled by skilled artisans.

Authentic pieces from the 19th century often display manufacturer maker marks, date ciphers, or electroplate stamps on the underside or rim. Look for natural signs of ageing, such as minor wear to the plating revealing the base metal underneath, and traditional hand-applied chasing rather than modern machine stamping.

These pieces can be used functionally for hosting or displayed purely as decorative metalware on a sideboard, dining table, or open shelving. Their reflective surfaces and intricate sculptural details introduce texture and historical contrast into contemporary or traditional dining spaces.

Preserve silver plated items by cleaning them infrequently with a specialized non-abrasive silver polish to avoid wearing down the thin plating. Store them in a dry, tarnish-resistant environment and wash them by hand using mild dish soap immediately after any food use.
