Claret jugs gained prominence in the Victorian era as specialised vessels designed specifically for serving red Bordeaux wine, often featuring elaborate metal mounts atop glass bodies.

These pieces typically combine blown or cut lead crystal glass with sterling silver or silver-plated mounts, often utilizing casting, chasing, and embossing techniques for the metal collars, lids, and handles.

Authenticity is assessed by examining hall-marks stamped on the silver mounts, which indicate the assay office, makers mark, and date letter, alongside evaluating the wear patterns and quality of the glass cutting.

Such pieces can be displayed on a sideboard, bar cart, or open shelving as a reflective metallic accent that adds texture and historic character to a room.

Silver components should be cleaned sparingly with a non-abrasive polish designed for antiques, avoiding contact with the glass, while the crystal is best washed in lukewarm water with mild detergent.
