Victorian silver spans the reign of Queen Victoria, characterised by diverse revival styles, intricate hand-engraving, and ornate flora and fauna motifs reflecting industrial manufacturing advancements and middle-class prosperity.

Victorian cake knives typically feature sterling silver or silver-plated blades with handles crafted from mother-of-pearl, bone, ivory, or turned hardwoods, often paired with hallmarked ferrules.

Authentic pieces are identified by stamped British hallmarks indicating the assay office, date letter, makers mark, and silver standard, alongside traditional hand-chased engraving rather than modern machine stamping.

An antique silver knife can be displayed inside a glass-fronted cabinet, mounted in a shadow box frame, or utilised functionally for contemporary dinner parties to add historical contrast to modern table settings.

Antique silver requires gentle polishing with a non-abrasive cloth specifically formulated for silver, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage mother-of-pearl handles and erode delicate hand-engraving.
