Description

I can't resist these beautiful small "country" made stools, used to put candles on, to raise the light up to nearer your work and eyes....I have seen a lot with the round marks underneath, from years of use by the lacemaker....the marks being where she has tightened her clamp....this one has an elm top and nicely chamfer shaped legs made out of ash....it has gained that lovely colour that that elm and ash go after many years of careful domestic use....the stool is in very good condition.

English. C1840-60.

English vernacular furniture refers to utilitarian pieces made by local craftsmen using regional timbers such as elm, ash, and oak, prioritising functional simplicity over formal academic styles.

These pieces typically feature solid elm seats combined with turned ash or oak legs, often constructed using traditional wedged tenon joints or through-tenons for structural stability.

Authentic pieces display period tool marks, genuine surface patination, hand-turned legs with slight irregularities, and shrinkage cracks appropriate to age and timber movement.

An antique stool works effectively as a functional accent piece, side table, or plant stand, adding tactile warmth and historical contrast to contemporary minimalist schemes.

Preserve the timber by avoiding direct sunlight and excessive humidity fluctuations, applying microcrystalline wax sparingly to maintain the natural finish without sealing the wood unnaturally.
