This French bouillotte wall light belongs to the 1900 period in a French Empire style. The piece combines cast brass elements with a toleware shade finished in a dark green crackle effect, highlighted by gold trim along the edges. The construction incorporates a vertical backplate decorated with palmette leaves and a central lion mask, supporting a horizontal oval frame with twin candle arms carrying black dummy candles. Signs of age include minor surface wear and crackling on the green shade. It measures 41 cm high, 33 cm wide, and 18 cm deep. Placed in a home today, this wall light suits a narrow wall space in a hallway, drawing room, or study, where it provides directional ambient illumination.

Originating in 18th-century France from the popular card game of Bouillotte, this style traditionally features candle arms set beneath a painted sheet-metal shade, known as toleware, designed to deflect glare downwards.

These fixtures are constructed using cast brass or bronze for the decorative armature and backplate, paired with hand-painted or enamelled sheet iron for the shade.

Authentic examples feature detailed cast brass backplates styled with Classical motifs such as palmettes, anthemia, or masques, combined with natural surface patination and painted metal shades.

A twin-arm toleware sconce can be installed to frame artwork, mounted within a narrow hallway, or positioned above a sideboard to add depth and warmth to a modern decorative scheme.

Dust painted toleware shades using a dry microfibre cloth to prevent water damage to the enamel, and wipe brass components gently without using abrasive chemical polishes.
