During the Edwardian period, literacy rates and the popularity of reading led to an increase in ornate reading accessories. Silver bookmarks, often crafted in whimsical shapes like trowels or page turners, became fashionable gifts and practical desk items.

Antique bookmarks from this era were frequently fashioned from sterling silver, often combined with organic elements such as mother-of-pearl, ivory, bone, or New Zealand greenstone (jade) for the handles.

Authentic pieces typically feature British hallmarks stamped directly onto the metal, indicating the assay office, standard of silver (such as sterling lion passant), and the date letter corresponding to the year of manufacture.

These small collectable items can be displayed on top of stacked vintage books on a coffee table, within a glass-fronted cabinet, or placed on a traditional writing desk to add historical texture to a room.

Sterling silver should be cleaned periodically with a specialised polishing cloth to remove tarnish, avoiding abrasive cleaners that might scratch the soft surface of the jade handle.
