FAQs

Figural silver boxes fashioned in the shape of animals, particularly fish, have a long tradition in European silversmithing, often utilised historically to store spices, herbs, or small luxury items at the dining table.

These pieces are typically crafted from sterling or continental silver, utilizing traditional methods such as hand-chasing, repousse, and casting to create detailed textures like scales and fins.

Authenticity is usually verified through makers marks, purity hallmarks stamped onto the metal, natural tarnish patterns, and the quality of the hand-chiselled detailing rather than mass-produced casting.

This type of decorative object works well as a focal point on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or coffee table, adding a touch of metallic texture and historical interest to contemporary spaces.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a professional micro-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth, avoiding harsh dips that can strip away the desirable dark oxidisation in recessed areas.
