Description

A George V era silver christening mug or tankard with clear hallmarks for London 1912 (the start of the reign) and makers mark for Stuart Clifford. This is a piece of superb quality having strong lines of design and a very good gauge of silver - it weighs 240gr - which can be seen in the thickness of the rim. The tankard stands on a footed stepped base, has a splendid scrolled handle in the Georgian style and the bowl has a very restrained but effective baluster shape (it slants in slightly from the lower part of the bowl and outwards again just below the rim), which gives it a modern feel for the time it was made. In exceptionally good condition, with no dents or dinks.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Silver christening mugs have been traditionally presented as heirloom gifts to commemorate the baptism or birth of a child, dating back centuries as a symbol of wealth, good fortune, and status.

Authentic British pieces are crafted from sterling silver and feature official assay office hallmarks, including a makers mark, standard mark, town mark like the leopards head for London, and a date letter indicating the year of assay.

Authenticity is verified through clear hallmarks, makers marks, appropriate weight, traditional manufacturing techniques such as soldered seams or raised bodies, and natural age-related tarnishing and wear patterns.

An antique silver mug can be styled as a functional desk accessory to hold pens, used as a small vase for seasonal florals, or displayed on a shelf as part of a curated metallic vignette.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a specialized silver cloth or mild, non-abrasive silver polish to maintain its patina, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage the surface and remove historical depth.
