Antique Ersari Beshir Turkmen Torba with Rams Horn Design, Circa 1880.

19th century
Description

Size: 3ft 11in x 1ft 7in (120 x 47cm) excluding tassels.

Antique Ersari Beshir Turkmen torba with double rams horn design.

Circa 1880.

Torba are shallow wall bags used mainly in tents or yurts for the storage of personal belongings, they were also used to decorate the sides of a camel in a wedding procession. Often only the piled face survives and the plain weave backs have been removed as with this example.

This example has six rows of three double rams horn devices on a rose madder ground, note the row of stars along the base above the tassels.

The torba is in excellent condition with very slight even wear and good pile, most of the original tassels remain as do the hanging cords attached to the sides.

Stock Number: D-0070.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A torba is a small, shallow, hand-woven storage bag traditionally created by nomadic Turkmen tribes, such as the Ersari, to store household goods inside tents or to transport belongings during nomadic migrations.

These pieces are hand-knotted using hand-spun sheeps wool for both the pile and foundation, often incorporating natural vegetable dyes to create deep terracotta red, navy, dark brown, and cream tones.

Authentic 19th-century examples feature hand-spun wool construction, natural dye variation, tight asymmetric knotting, geometric tribal motifs such as the rams horn design, and original woven handles or long wool fringes.

These small woven textiles are frequently mounted as framed textile art or displayed directly on a wall using original hanging straps to add rich texture, historic colour, and geometric pattern to contemporary spaces.

Display the textile away from direct sunlight to prevent natural dyes from fading, vacuum gently using suction only without a beater bar, and consult a professional textile conservator for specialized cleaning.
