Menu holders became popular during the Victorian and Edwardian periods as formal multi-course dinners required designated menus placed at intervals along the dining table to inform guests of the upcoming courses.

These items were predominantly crafted from sterling silver using casting, stamping, and hand-engraving techniques, often featuring weighted bases filled with resin or plaster to ensure stability.

Authentic pieces typically feature British hallmark stamps indicating the assay office, standard of silver purity such as sterling, and a date letter corresponding to the specific year of manufacture.

They can be repurposed on a mantelpiece, displayed inside a glass cabinet, or used functionally on a dining table to add a touch of historical character and refined craftsmanship to contemporary spaces.

Silver should be gently cleaned using a soft microfibre cloth and specialised silver polish only when necessary, avoiding harsh abrasives, and stored in a dry environment to prevent excessive tarnishing.
