This is a good quality antique George V Afghan Turkman Rug, measuring 5ft 2” long by 3ft 1” wide, believed to be from the Turkmen tribal area, Afghanistan, displaying red, purple, blue, fawn & white colours on a symmetrical patterned background, circa 1915, in good original condition. The natural hand-dyed sheep’s wool, most likely from cochineal, due to its rich colours, was made by tribesmen and has been hand-spun before being constructed on a woven loom.

The Afghan Turkman Rug displays three borders, geometric in design, with a symmetrical floral motif patterned background and a symmetrical geometric diagonal hexagonal centre, interspersed with a detailed pattern, finished with a fringe both ends. The Afghan Turkman Rug boasts incredible detail, displaying natural vibrant colours of red, purple, blue, fawns and whites; a pleasing overall effect.

These rugs were often used by tribesmen as door hangings for their tents. With a medium and tightly knotted pile, it makes it suitable for medium to high traffic areas.

Condition Report

This is a good quality antique George V Afghan Turkman Rug, measuring 5ft 2” long by 3ft 1” wide, believed to be from the Turkmen tribal area, Afghanistan, displaying red, purple, blue, fawn & white colours on a symmetrical patterned background, circa 1915, in good original condition. The rug shows signs of age-related wear to one end, near the fringe (please see photos). Some wear is expected from a rug of this age. There are no holes or stains. The colours are rich and vibrant. With a medium and tightly knotted pile, it makes it suitable for medium to high traffic areas. This Afghan Turkman Rug is ready to use.
