Antique Yomut Turkmen saddle cover / rug with classic design.

Circa 1920.

This excellent tribal saddle rug by the Yomut Turkmen of Turkmenistan or north-eastern Persia features a classic Yomut repeat design. Note the opening for the pommel of the saddle.

Excellent condition with slight even wear and good pile, some signs of tribal use. Note how all the edges are over-bound in alternating colours.

A related, but older example is in the Textile Museum Collection, item: 2021.17.92. Also published in 'Adorning the Horse' item number 128, page 241.

Turkmen saddle covers, traditionally known as icmek, were woven by semi-nomadic tribes in Central Asia, such as the Yomut and Tekke groups. Crafted to fit over a horse saddle, these functional equine textiles protected the leatherwork and added ceremonial decoration during travel and formal gatherings.

These textiles are typically hand-knotted or flatwoven using hand-spun sheep wool for both the pile and warp/weft structures. Natural vegetable and insect dyes, such as madder for deep reds and indigo for blues, were traditionally used to create the distinct saturated colour palettes.

Authentic Yomut pieces frequently feature specific geometric diamond motifs, known as guls, alongside latch-hook borders and asymmetric knotting structures.
