Baluch rugs are traditionally hand-knotted by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes inhabiting the borderlands of Iran and Afghanistan. Khorasan Baluch rugs, in particular, are known for their rich wool quality, deep dark brown and aubergine grounds, and distinctive geometric motifs.

Authentic pieces are crafted entirely from hand-spun wool, utilising vegetable and natural dyes for colours such as madder red, indigo blue, and dark brown. They feature hand-knotted pile foundations often finished with knotted or overcast selvedges and kilim ends.

Authentication involves examining the handle, knot density, natural abrash in the wool, and backside construction. Hand-spun wool exhibits slight variations in colour and texture, and authentic older pieces typically feature non-symmetrical structures with goat hair or wool in the weft.

An antique tribal rug provides grounding texture and rich colour to modern spaces. It works effectively layered over larger natural fibre flooring or placed as a focal point on polished wood floors to contrast clean architectural lines with historical craftsmanship.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, professional washing by a textile conservator every few years, and keeping the rug out of direct sunlight to prevent natural dye fading.
