Description

A superbly detailed high quality cast solid silver wax seal. It is hallmarked with the 800 standard mark. I would date it to c1910. It has been superbly cast in the form of Napoleon. It is in superb condition being free from dings splits and repairs, no initials to the end but it will need to be smoothed off if used. It measures approx. 2.5 inches (6.5cm) tall by 0.75 inch (1.8cm) across the base and weighs 50 grams. A very high quality unusual piece.

Declaration

The Silver Squirrel has dated this Silver Napoleon Desk Seal to the 1910s.

FAQs

Desk seals were essential nineteenth and early twentieth-century writing accessories used to impress a personal crest or monogram into sealing wax on correspondence. Figural pieces often depicted historical figures, animals, or symbolic motifs reflecting the owners interests or political loyalties.

Desk seals were crafted from a wide variety of materials including sterling silver, continental silver, brass, bronze, carved semi-precious stones, glass, ivory, and wood, frequently featuring matrix bases made from stone or metal.

Authenticity is determined by examining hallmarks or purity stamps, casting quality, wear patterns consistent with age, and the method of construction. Continental silver pieces often feature standard marks such as 800 or specific country assay punches.

This type of small object is typically displayed on a writing desk, within a cabinet of curiosities, or styled on a bookshelf alongside leather-bound volumes to add a layer of historical interest and textural detail.

Silver seals should be stored in a dry environment and cleaned infrequently with a soft microfibre cloth to preserve the natural oxidisation and patination. Aggressive chemical polishes should be avoided to protect fine cast details.
