FAQs

Decorative desk clips gained popularity during the 19th century as expanding written correspondence required functional yet stylish methods for organising notes and letters on executive writing desks.

Master craftsmen typically utilised sterling silver, tortoiseshell, brass, and carved ivory, often combining metals with organic materials to create contrasting textures and visual interest.

Authenticity is determined by examining hallmarks on the silver elements, assessing the natural tonal variations and grain of genuine tortoiseshell, and evaluating the period-appropriate mechanical construction.

This piece can be placed atop a stack of vintage books on an executive desk or styled on a bookshelf to add a touch of historical character and refined texture to a study.

Keep the object away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations to prevent the tortoiseshell from warping, and gently clean the silver using a specialised non-abrasive polishing cloth.
