Size: 4ft 2in x 2ft 10in (126x 86cm).

Antique Baluch prayer rug of rare form with Turkmen design.

Circa 1880 or earlier.

This rare rug with Turkmen inspired design is considered by Craycraft to be by the Sarakh Baluch. The two vertical rows of large round Turkmen guls appear to be disappearing at the top under the mihrab, giving a three dimensional effect. The minor guls are also of Turkmen design.

The rug is in good condition with even wear and medium pile.

The rug is suitable for light domestic use.

This is a rare rug from a scarce group of weavings, it is very collectible and would make a superb wall hanging.

Baluch rugs are hand-woven textiles traditionally created by nomadic Baluch tribes residing near the border regions of eastern Persia and Afghanistan. Prayer rugs feature a distinctive arch or niche design, known as a mihrab, oriented towards Mecca during daily prayers.

These rugs are hand-knotted primarily using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the warp/weft structure, though goat hair or cotton is occasionally incorporated. Dyes are sourced naturally from plants, insects, and minerals, producing characteristic deep reds, indigo blues, and natural dark brown shades.
