This antique Yomut Turkmen rug dates from around 1900 and displays a classic wool construction with a fine weave. The deep red field contains three full rows of seven octagonal turreted guls, surrounded by intricate geometric star borders and large diamond elem skirts at both ends with fringed edges in white. The piece exhibits slight even wear alongside a good pile, reflecting careful preservation. Measuring 245 cm high by 168 cm wide and 1 cm deep, the carpet suits normal domestic placement on a floor in spaces such as a gentleman's library or a living area. The hand-washed floor covering comes ready for regular home use.

Yomut Turkmen rugs were woven by the Yomut tribe, one of the primary nomadic groups of Central Asia residing near the Caspian Sea. Produced during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, these textiles are distinguished by their geometric composition, deep crimson or liver-red ground colours, and repeating tribal emblems known as guls.

Authentic Yomut rugs are hand-knotted using hand-spun sheep wool for both the pile and the foundation structure. Dyes were historically derived from natural sources, such as madder root for deep red tones, indigo for navy shades, and natural un-dyed wool for ivory accents, yielding high knot density and durable construction.

Vacuum gently using a suction-only setting without a rotating brush to protect the pile structure. Clean spills immediately by blotting with a clean cloth and lukewarm water, rotate the rug annually to ensure even wear, and place a quality rug pad underneath to prevent fiber compression.

A classic red Turkmen carpet provides a grounding focal point when paired with dark wood furniture, leather seating, or neutral linen upholstery. Interior designers often use them to add warmth and historical texture to Gentlemans Library styles, traditional English interiors, or contemporary minimal spaces.

Authentic pieces are identified by specific gul forms, such as the kepse or dyrmak motif, set in symmetrical rows. Additional features include a flat-woven hem or elem end panels decorated with small geometric trees or diamonds, natural colour variations known as abrash, and a wool warp and weft.
