Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a non-abrasive silver cloth to remove tarnish while preserving the desirable patina and depth in the recessed areas. Avoid harsh chemical dips, which can strip the original finish and any applied gilding.

This piece can be displayed on a coffee table, bookshelf, or mantelpiece as a decorative accent or utilised functionally to hold small items like keys or cufflinks. Its metallic sheen and detailed texture add a layer of historical contrast to contemporary minimalist schemes.

Authentic pieces bear legible hallmarks including makers marks, the standard mark for sterling silver, the assay office mark indicating the location of testing, and a date letter signifying the year of manufacture. Importers marks and pseudo-hallmarks are also common on continental silver imported into Britain.

These items are crafted from sterling silver, frequently featuring intricate repousse and chased ornamentation where designs are hammered and detailed from both sides. Many examples also feature a gilded interior, known as vermeil, applied to the silver surface.

Victorian silver table boxes were produced during the reign of Queen Victoria, often utilised on dressing tables or writing desks for storing small valuables, jewellery, or correspondence. Many continental silver pieces from this era, particularly from Hanau, were imported into Britain and bore British assay office marks such as Chester.
