Art Nouveau is an international design movement that flourished between 1890 and 1910, characterised by organic, flowing lines inspired by natural forms such as plants, flowers, and whiplash curves.

These pieces are typically constructed using blown or moulded glass encased in a chemically bonded or electroplated silver layer, which is then hand-engraved or cut away to reveal the coloured glass beneath.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit heavy, high-quality glass, genuine sterling silver hallmarks or stamps denoting purity, and subtle signs of age such as fine surface scratching and natural silver oxidisation.

They can be displayed on mirrored vanity trays, open bathroom shelving, or mantelpieces to catch the light, adding a touch of period elegance and rich colour to contemporary spaces.

Clean the glass with a damp cloth and mild soap, avoiding harsh abrasives, and use a specialized, non-abrasive silver cloth very gently on the metallic overlay to prevent damage to the bonded edges.
