During the Victorian era, the rise of mass literacy and publishing led to a boom in decorative reading accessories, including ornamental bookmarks crafted from precious metals and natural materials.

These items typically combined sterling silver or silver plate with organic materials such as mother-of-pearl, bone, or ivory, often featuring finely chased or engraved details.

Authentic items from the period often feature British hallmarks indicating the assay office, metal purity, and date letter, alongside hand-engraved decorative motifs typical of 19th-century metalwork.

Such pieces can be displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, used as functional desk accents on a writing table, or styled atop open coffee table books to add historical interest.

To preserve these materials, keep them away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity. Clean the silver gently with a specialist microfibre polishing cloth while avoiding harsh chemical dips that could damage the delicate nacre.
