FAQs

Georgian caddy spoons were specialised utensils created during the Georgian era to measure loose-leaf tea from a caddy into a teapot. Due to the high cost of tea at the time, these spoons were crafted with great care, often reflecting prevailing neoclassical or naturalistic design motifs.

These pieces were typically crafted from sterling silver, sometimes utilizing Sheffield plate or coin silver. Silversmiths employed techniques such as stamping, casting, piercing, and hand-engraving to achieve intricate details like leaf veins and textured handles.

Authentic pieces bear English, Scottish, or Irish silver hallmarks, which usually include a makers mark, a standard mark indicating sterling silver, a duty mark showing tax payment, and a date letter corresponding to the assay office and year of manufacture.

These small collector items can be displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, shadow boxes, or styled neatly on silver display trays alongside other Georgian tableware to add a touch of historical craftsmanship to a room.

Antique silver should be cleaned infrequently using a non-abrasive silver cloth or specialized polish to avoid wearing down hallmarks and delicate engravings. Store them in a dry, tarnish-resistant environment away from direct sunlight.
