The Celtic Revival movement emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, drawing inspiration from ancient insular art, ancient manuscripts, and carved cross slabs, particularly through workshops established in remote locations like the Isle of Iona.

These pieces are typically fashioned from sterling silver, often shaped by hand using traditional metalsmithing techniques such as hammering, chasing, and repousse to accentuate intricate interlaced knotwork and symbolic motifs.

Authentic pieces usually bear clear hallmarks indicating the assay office, standard of silver, and date letter, alongside specific makers marks or workshop stamps characteristic of renowned regional silversmiths.

Antique silver items add texture and historical depth when displayed within modern settings, such as being showcased inside glass-fronted cabinets, arranged on open shelving, or used functionally on a dining table.

Preservation requires storing items in tarnish-resistant cloth, cleaning infrequently with a non-abrasive specialist silver polish, and avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage the delicate oxidised detailing within engraved recesses.
