Victorian scent bottles were essential personal accessories during the 19th century, used to carry volatile salts or perfumes to combat unpleasant odours or faintness in crowded public spaces.

These pieces were typically crafted from sterling silver, often featuring detailed repousse, chased, or engraved designs, and fitted with tight screw caps or hinged lids enclosing glass stoppers.

Authenticity is verified by examining the hallmarks for makers marks, city assay offices, and date letters, alongside evaluating the natural patination and hand-worked detailing characteristic of 19th-century silversmithing.

Such miniature silver objects are typically displayed as cabinet curiosities, arranged on decorative trays on a dressing table, or integrated into a vignette alongside books and ceramics.

Preservation requires storing items in a stable environment away from high humidity, avoiding harsh chemical dips, and using a soft microfibre cloth to gently clean the surface while preserving the aged patina.
