Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Neoclassical lyre sconces feature a central frame carved in the shape of an ancient Greek musical instrument, symbolic of Apollo and the arts. Popularised during the late eighteenth century in France, these wall lights typically combine stringed instrument motifs with classical ornament such as laurel garlands, scrolling foliage, and solar crestings.

Authentic period sconces were hand-carved from softwoods such as pine or lime before being coated with layers of gesso and clay bole. Thin sheets of gold leaf were then applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques, while candle arms were often reinforced with metal armatures for structural strength.

Authentic giltwood displays natural age-related wear, including shrinkage cracks along wood grain joints and tiny areas of exposed red or yellow bole beneath the gold leaf. The reverse side should show hand-cut carving marks, original iron fixing plates, and aged unpainted timber rather than uniform modern machine cuts.

Pairing giltwood sconces with minimalist furniture or matte paint finishes creates a striking contrast between historic ornament and contemporary lines. Placing them in pairs flanking a mantlepiece, sideboard, or large doorway establishes formal symmetry and architectural balance within a room.

Giltwood surfaces should be dusted gently using a dry, soft squirrel-hair brush to prevent lifting loose gold leaf. Water, liquid cleaners, and commercial polishes must be avoided entirely, as moisture dissolves the underlying gesso glue layer and permanently damages water-gilded finishes.
