An albert chain is a type of watch chain designed to secure a pocket watch to a waistcoat or jacket, named after Prince Albert who popularised the fashion during the nineteenth century.

These chains are typically crafted from sterling silver or gold, featuring graduated links, a T-bar for securing through a buttonhole, and swivel clasps for attaching a pocket watch and fobs.

Authentic pieces generally feature British hallmark stamps on individual links and the T-bar, indicating the assay office, metal purity, and date letter of manufacture.

These versatile pieces can be worn as a necklace, wrapped as a bracelet, or incorporated into contemporary tailoring as a traditional pocket watch chain.

Silver pieces should be stored in anti-tarnish bags and cleaned gently with a specialist microfibre polishing cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage historic patinas and hallmarks.
