Superb Victorian Cast Iron Fender

19th century
Description

This curved and very decorative 19th century fender is beautifully cast with scrolls, leaves and Tudor rose boss handles. Having been professionally polished, the fender now has the appearance of burnished steel.

Small fenders like this one were placed on the hearth to keep falling ash in check. While still useful for this purpose, today it can be regarded as a very decorative item.

The quality of this fender is outstanding and it would add character and charm to a contemporary home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian fireplace fender is a low metal border placed around the base of a hearth to contain falling ash, embers, and coal dust, while serving as a decorative frame for the fireplace during the nineteenth century.

Victorian fenders were predominantly manufactured from cast iron, wrought iron, brass, or copper, often featuring cast relief detailing, pierced motifs, and moulded rims.

Original Victorian fenders exhibit heavy weight due to solid cast iron construction, slight surface irregularities from sand casting, crisp relief patterns such as foliate scrollwork or rosettes, and genuine age-related patination or minor surface oxidisation on the underside.

Position the fender directly on the hearth surface in front of an open grate, stove, or decorative bioethanol burner to add structural definition and period depth to contemporary or restored living spaces.

Remove loose dust with a soft brush, then clean using a damp cloth and mild soap before thoroughly drying. Apply black grate polish or paste periodically to protect the iron from moisture and preserve the matte graphite sheen.
