Victorian silver salvers were formal serving trays used in affluent households during the 19th century, frequently employed for serving drinks, presenting calling cards, or displaying precious objects.

Authentic pieces from this era are crafted from solid sterling silver, typically bearing a fineness mark of 925, and are shaped using traditional silversmithing techniques such as casting, hammering, and hand-chasing.

Authenticity is verified by examining the hallmarks stamped on the metal, which typically include the assay office mark, the date letter for the specific year of production, the lion passant for sterling silver, and the makers mark.

In modern settings, a silver salver can be placed flat on a sideboard or coffee table to reflect light, or used as a reflective base to group smaller decorative items such as glass decanters and candles.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using specialised non-abrasive silver polish and a soft microfibre cloth to remove tarnish while preserving the original patina and fine engraved details.
