During the Victorian era, tea was an expensive commodity, leading to the development of lockable or secure caddies designed to store and preserve precious tea leaves.

While early examples were predominantly crafted from exotic woods with brass inlays, later Victorian pieces frequently utilised sterling silver, plated metals, and occasionally tortoiseshell or papier-mache.

Authenticity is verified by checking for clear silversmith hallmarks, appropriate weight, period-accurate construction techniques, and natural signs of age-related wear on the metal.

This piece can be placed on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or open shelving to introduce metallic texture and historical contrast into contemporary living spaces.

Antique silver should be gently cleaned using a specialised non-abrasive silver cloth and mild soapy water, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip historical patina.
