Victorian 15ct Gold Chrysoberyl Triple Teardrop Brooch

19th century
Sold 10 December 2025 · Corvidae Antique
This “Victorian 15ct Gold Chrysoberyl Triple Teardrop Brooch” found a buyer.

It was listed by Corvidae Antique. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

A lovely rich gold Victorian Etruscan revival brooch with gorgeous detailing and a design of vine leaves above a trio of foil-backed teardrop gemstones which test as chrysoberyl.

The brooch overall is in good solid antique condition. One of the stones has a chip at the bottom, although it's really only visible under strong magnification. There are the remains of some historic solder on the back.

Fifteen-carat gold pieces are not overly common (in the UK only really used between 1854 and 1932) and as this fineness was generally used in high quality pieces, it is attractive to collectors.

Size: Approximately 2.7 x 2.8cm.

Weight: 4.3g.

Victorian jewellery spans the reign of Queen Victoria (18371901) and is typically divided into three distinct periods: Romantic, Grand, and Aesthetic. It often features sentimental motifs, heavy use of gold, and distinctive gemstone settings reflecting the changing cultural moods and technological advancements of the industrial age.

Authentic pieces from this period frequently utilised 9ct, 15ct, or 18ct gold, often combined with silver settings for gemstones to enhance sparkle. Construction methods included hand-chased detailing, repousse work, closed-back settings in earlier pieces, and tube hinges with C-clasps.

Authentication relies on examining hallmarks, catch and pin mechanisms, and construction techniques. Period pieces typically display hallmarks indicating gold purity corresponding to British standards, hand-soldered components, and characteristic wear patterns consistent with age rather than modern casting methods.

Antique brooches offer versatile styling potential beyond traditional lapels. They can be pinned to coat collars, used to secure scarves, fastened at the neckline of a blouse, or even repurposed as a pendant on a gold chain for a contemporary aesthetic.

Historic jewellery requires gentle maintenance, avoiding ultrasonic cleaners and harsh chemical dips which can damage delicate settings and softer gemstones. Cleaning should be limited to soft microfibre cloths, and pieces should be stored individually in lined boxes away from moisture.
