William IV Antique Silver Snuff Box, Edward Smith 1836

18th century
Description

A wonderful antique William IV silver snuff box. Made in Birmingham in 1836 by Edward Smith an expert snuff box maker. The cast top panel is one of the crispest I've seen. It has very little high point rubbing. The interior has a full set of hallmarks, it is gilded and has a period inscription. Generally the box is in excellent condition and one of the best I have had. Very collectable.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced during the reign of King William IV between 1830 and 1837, these silver boxes mark a transitional period between Georgian restraint and Victorian ornamentation. They frequently feature detailed repousse scenes, naturalistic foliage, and heavy cast rims.

These boxes were primarily crafted from sterling silver, often featuring gilt-washed interiors to protect the metal from chemical reaction with tobacco. Construction involved skilled techniques such as chasing, repousse relief work, and hand-fitted flush hinges.

Authentic pieces carry official hallmarking, including a makers mark, silver purity mark, town mark, and date letter indicating the year of manufacture. Weight, crisp relief detail, and precise hinge alignment also distinguish genuine period silver from later reproductions.

Small decorative silver boxes serve well as accent pieces on an office desk, a mantelpiece, or styled atop books on a coffee table. Displaying them alongside dark wood or leather-bound volumes adds visual interest to modern spaces.

Silver should be dusted regularly with a soft cotton cloth and cleaned gently using a dedicated silver polish to remove tarnish. Avoid immersing pieces with gilded interiors in water or using abrasive pastes that could wear down delicate surface details.
