Three-legged stools, often called tripod stools, are among the oldest forms of seating, traditionally made by rural craftsmen and farmers who needed stable seating on uneven dirt or stone floors.

These utility items were typically constructed from native British timbers such as elm, oak, ash, and pine, utilising green woodworking techniques with turned or cleft legs wedged into a solid seat slab.

Authenticity is identified through period tool marks like adze work on dished seats, hand-turned tenons extending through the top, natural timber shrinkage, and genuine patination from decades of use.

This piece can serve as a functional side table next to a sofa or as a standalone plinth for displaying plants or pottery, adding organic warmth and historical texture to contemporary spaces.

Preservation requires keeping the timber away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity to prevent cracking, occasionally treating the surface with traditional beeswax to nourish the historic finish.
