Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramic wares produced in the Arita region and historically shipped from the port of Imari, characterised by underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron-red and gold decoration.

It was crafted from local kaolin stone fired at high temperatures, decorated first with underglaze blue motifs, glazed, and then hand-painted with overglaze enamels and gilding before a final lower-temperature enamel firing.

Authentic pieces feature underglaze cobalt blue paired with rich iron-red enamel and gilding, slight asymmetries from hand-painting, unglazed foot rims, and occasional kiln marks or spur marks on the base.
