George III Scottish Silver And Agate Vinaigrette, Edinburgh 1810

£380    $509    €445
This is a Scottish George III hallmarked silver vinaigrette. It was assayed in Edinburgh in 1810 and was probably made by Richard Haxton.

It is of oval form with a hinged lid which is set with polished banded agate. The front is engraved with the initials JEG in cursive script. The gilt interior has an unmarked hinged grill drill pierced and heightened with scrolls. It is marked to the base with RH in a rectangle, standard mark, and duty mark only.

Unfortunately the grille has been broken off at the hinge as can be seen in the photographs. There is a small imperfection just above the thumbpiece. It is otherwise in good order with marks and wear commensurate with age.

Total weight 19 grams / 0.61 ozt
