FAQs

Salt cellars have been used on dining tables since medieval times, initially as status symbols that indicated where important guests sat relative to the master of the house, evolving into matched sets by the 18th and 19th centuries.

Traditional salt cellars were crafted using sterling silver, often featuring cast construction with hand-chased details, and typically included a gilded interior known as parcel-gilding to protect the silver from the corrosive effects of salt.

Authentic pieces are identified by hallmarks stamped on the metal indicating the maker, city, standard of silver, and date of assay, alongside natural patination, weight, and traditional casting flaws.

These versatile vessels can be repurposed on dining tables for contemporary place settings, displayed on a sideboard as collectable objects, or used to hold small items like rings and cufflinks on a dressing table.

Preserve silver salts by cleaning them sparingly with a non-abrasive silver polish, washing them immediately after use to remove corrosive residues, and storing them in tarnish-resistant cloths in low-humidity environments.
