Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Edwardian ladies writing desk is an antique piece of furniture crafted in warm brown mahogany with satinwood crossbanding and stringing. The curved top features a red leather insert with gold tooling, complemented by five small drawers fitted with brass swing handles, while slender tapered square legs finish in small brass castors. Very slight losses to the edges show light signs of age, though the structure remains solid. The piece stands 75 cm high, 106 cm wide, and 63 cm deep. Placed in a home study, bedroom, or living room, it provides a functional surface for writing, correspondence, or displaying small decorative objects while maintaining a traditional English country house aesthetic.

FAQs

Originating in design during the 18th century and refined in the Edwardian era, kidney-shaped writing desks are defined by a concave front curve that allows the user to easily reach all sections of the desktop. They typically feature satinwood or boxwood inlays, gilt-tooled leather writing surfaces, and delicate tapered legs.

Edwardian cabinetmakers predominantly used solid and veneered mahogany, frequently accented with marquetry or crossbanding using woods like satinwood, rosewood, and ebony. Writing surfaces were commonly lined with gold-tooled leather, and brass was favoured for handles, keyhole escutcheons, and castors.

Authentic Edwardian desks display fine construction techniques, such as hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, original brass castors, and natural age patination on the timber. The underside and back boards usually show subtle saw marks and unrefined finishing compared to modern reproductions.

A kidney-shaped desk works exceptionally well placed centrally in a room or angling out from a corner due to its fully finished curved back. Pair it with a contemporary task lamp, a modern armchair or desk chair, and subtle neutral accessories to balance the detailed timber inlay.

Keep the desk away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the mahogany veneer from drying out or splitting and to avoid fading the leather skiver. Clean the wood using a high-grade beeswax polish, and maintain the leather top with a specialised leather balm.
